The members of the Administration Board have approved the motion made
that Old South United Methodist become a Covenant Church for Habitat
for Humanity of Lowell. As a Covenant Church, Old South will support
the efforts of Habitat through prayer, regular work teams and a yearly
financial contribution to this ministry.
Every other month we will either send a work team to help with
construction, or make and provide lunch for another work team.
If you are interested in participating in any way,
call the church or you may sign up at the sign-up sheet on the Church
and Society Commission bulletin board. You may sign up to be
part of a work team or to help out with providing lunches for the
workers at the site. If you have questions about Habitat or ideas you
wish to share please contact the church.
Lazarus House, Lawrence, MA
The Church and Society Commission sponsors service opportunities to
the Lazarus House in Lawrence. The shelter has 30 beds, and 7 cribs,
and most of the rooms are taken by families. Families come to the
shelter for a variety of reasons-evictions, abusive situations,
fires, etc. The shelter serves daily meals to the
residents. Volunteers are needed to help with food preparation or
serving anytime, but especially any morning from 6:30-7:30 or
lunchtime on Wednesdays and Fridays. Food can be prepared at the
kitchen in the shelter or prepared elsewhere and delivered. In
addition, Lazarus House has a thrift shop that also needs
volunteers to help sort, clean and organize items in the shop. If you
would like to help in any way, call the church for information on how
to get involved.
Tarbox Elementary School, located in northern Lawrence, is the school
that Old South donated books to as part of this year's Lenten Giving
Effort. This school serves one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods
in Lawrence, the poorest community in our state. In fact, Tarbox is
just a few blocks from the Lazarus House shelter, which Old South
supports in a variety of ways. The school is in need of volunteers who
are interested in spending some time helping children practice new
skills they are learning. Many of the children's parents do not speak
English so it is not possible for the children to practice their
reading skills at home. These children need someone to listen to them
read, and all children enjoy having adults come and read to
them. Also, volunteers who wish to help students with math are always
appreciated as well. If you are interested in learning more about
volunteer opportunities at Tarbox, call the church for information on
how to getinvolved.
Soup Kitchen in Lowell
The St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Lowell serves dinner two
nights a week. They serve 50-60 people between 5:00-6:00 PM every
Monday and Wednesday. Last year, they served approximately 4,500
meals. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve the meals. If
it is not possible for you to be in Lowell when they serve,
another option is to prepare a meal off site and bring it to the
church to be served on a future night. For more information about how
you can help, please call the church.
