Holocaust: Religious & Philosphical Implications

Starts September 14

(The Holocaust course is an extension from Session 5 of previous year. You are invited to attend the class. It is not necessary to have attended earlier)

One of the defining events of the 20th century, the Holocaust still reverberates 60 years later. Regularly, newspaper articles remind us that that bestial period continues to lead to arrests of alleged perpetrators, while victims seek reparations for damages suffered. Though we may well look at some historical aspects of the Holocaust (whys and hows), we will focus on its religious and philosophical aspects through the eyes of historians, victims and their profound writings, psychologists, philosophers, and professors of religion. Our text will be, "Holocaust. Religious & Philosophical Implications", edited by John K Roth and Michael Berenbaum. At the end of the course, a bibliography for additional reading will be provided.

Group Leader: Cherrie Dubois

A native of Reading, Cherrie Dubois grew up and was confirmed in the First Congregational Church. In high school, she was an English student of Wendell Hodgkins, and came to attend and later join Old South, which then had the town's premier youth fellowship. She graduated with a BA in English from Colby College, Waterville, Maine, and earned an MA in English from the University of New Hampshire. Since graduation from Colby, she has taught English at Wakefield High. Always interested in the Holocaust, she has independently read and studied it, culminating her interest by taking a formal course at Tufts. For the past several years, Cherrie has taught a half year Holocaust class at WHS, focusing on documentary and feature films, as well as research projects. Other historical times and events also interest her, and she is an avid and eclectic reader. When not correcting essays and tests, she enjoys gardening, walking, travel, and family, especially her two wonderful nieces, Marjanna (16) and Camille (9).
